Andreas Röhn

Masterclass Violin

Andreas Röhn served as the First Concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for 28 years and is currently a Professor of Violin at the State University of Music in Hamburg, where he himself once studied under Eva Hauptmann, a student of Carl Flesch. His foundational training was provided by his father, Erich Röhn, former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler. He further honed his artistry with renowned teachers such as Max Rostal, Christian Ferras, Josef Gingold, and most notably Henryk Szeryng, who became his most significant musical mentor.

After winning First Prize at the International Carl Flesch Competition, Röhn embarked on a solo career that took him across many countries. In 1973, he was appointed First Concertmaster of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart under Sergiu Celibidache. In 1981, he joined the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in the same role, during the tenure of Rafael Kubelík.

In addition to his work with the orchestra’s subsequent chief conductors, Röhn maintained an active teaching career in Hamburg and continued to perform as a soloist and with his piano trio. He also drew profound inspiration from collaborations with guest conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, and the unforgettable Leonard Bernstein.
